Before last year the last time nails were really just poppin, was when hump nails and airbrush were in. If you were born any time after "93" I'm sure you might not even know what airbrush and hump nails are, but its ok we are going to leave that in the past for now, because it's all about the coffin, stiletto, and lipstick shaped nails...
I'm all about nails and supporting the black community so of course I had to slide in Ms. Tonika Collins (@simplytonika) dms
If you have social media I'm for sure you've came across this talented young lady's viral video of "the mood changing gel nail polish" from all the shares the video received, but not only in the U.S. of A but overseas as well.
I've recently talked with Ms. Tonika
So check out my interview with her and get to know your future nail tech...
Sitting with Ms. Tonika I've learned she is from, and currently residing in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She is not only a full time nail tech, but also a full time student attending University of central Oklahoma (UCO) studying sociology. So if you're on campus say "hi"! Not to mention she's very down to earth! She is not letting these "likes" go to her head, I promise. Lol! If I may add, this is also her last year before graduation.
Being raised in a single parent household Ms. Tonika told us her mom has been her inspiration (Hey moms!) As well as her sister, bf, and community keeping her motivated . Oh did I mention the girl can sing? In her free time she enjoys karaoke with her mom and friends.
Ms. Tonika also enjoys putting together events to give back to the kiddos, like back to school giveaways, along with other industry friends.
When asked...At what age did you realize you had a passion for nails?"
I realized I had a passion for nails when I was about 12-13. I always wanted to go to the nail shop with mom just to watch and learn from professionals. I started doing pedi's first worked my way up to nails by polishing nails in between classes.
"Who is your nailspiration?
"Nunis Torres and Poochie!" There was also another nail tech who was a local well known tech that Ms. Tonika was inspired by who also let her know by telling her these words "You will never be success in the nail industry, because of your skin color! Nobody wants to get their nails serviced by a black person! They only want "us" to do it" -"Unknown" Nail Tec
Did y'all catch that shade or nah? Lol! I had to be petty for a second because I couldn't believe this "unknown nail tech" had the nerve to say something like that to all my readers. If you put your mind to it, you too, can achieve it! If you're reading this blog MS.TONIKA COLLINS has proven with the help of her mom, sisters, and boyfriend she was able to let all the negativity go in one ear and out the other, and focus on the prize.
By "us" I'm pretty sure you know who she means smh (Reaction on viral video...)"
I for sure was not expecting that! I'm in a couple nail groups on Facebook and I haven't posted anything in a while so I decide to post the video of "the mood changing nail polish", and next thing I know, my phone just start going off with all kinds of alerts froms Facebook, Instagram, etc. I'm just so shocked by all the positive feed back! I would like to thank everyone who liked, shared, and commented on this video it means everything to me!
Since the video went viral, I recently teamed up and worked with "The Color Club" which is a popular company in New York, who also partners with celebs like Tahiry from Love and Hip Hop New York...I've also have been getting non stop messages on when am I coming to requested cities.
As of right now I have things in the works! Starting with my first nail tour in Dallas, Tx November 14-15
I'm also working on logos and t-shirts, along with planning my first hands on class.
Follow my Instagram for updates on what I will be doing in the next few months, I have big plans coming soon.
I just want to thank you for letting me be the first to interview you on your success!
I'll be hosting a nail/pamper party with Ms. Tonika on November 14/15.
If you are in the Dallas, Tx area during this time it's the perfect time to book an appointment before it's too late!
